BEAUTIFUL Tidy Towns gold medallist Abbeyleix will represent Ireland in the Entente Florale Europe competition.

Selection for the contest is welcome news for the heritage town, as it will bring tourism and cultural contacts across Europe and enhance the reputation of Abbeyleix as a place worth visiting.

The prestigious and well-known international horticultural competition recognises towns and villages in Europe for excellence in horticultural displays. Abbeyleix is entered in the village section, with judging of all entrants this summer.

Abbeyleix Tidy Towns’ committee secretary Mary White is inviting as many people as possible to attend an information meeting at 8pm on Monday 20 February in the Manor Hotel, as plans begin for the competition.

The aims of Entente Florale include the greening of towns and villages with planting of flowers, shrubs and trees; the development of green spaces and parks; encouraging environmentally and ecologically sensitive projects and promoting environmental awareness with educational and communication initiatives.

The competition also aims to foster community spirit and quality of life and facilitate international contacts among the participating towns and villages network.
