FOUR suspects were arrested after a man was repeatedly stabbed in a Portarlington apartment last Friday morning.

The victim was rushed to Tullamore hospital with a number of stab wounds following the violent incident in French Church Street. Aged in his 30s, the man received medical treatment for his injuries, which are not life-threatening.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, as they continue to investigate the stabbing, which happened at about 8am. The crime scene was preserved for a garda technical examination.

Four men ranging in age from 20s to 40s were arrested by gardaí and were detained for interview under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Two were brought to Portlaoise Garda Station and the others were brought to Tullamore Garda Station for questioning in connection with the stabbing.

All four were subsequently released without charge, but it is understood that files are being prepared for the director of public prosecutions (DPP) in relation to two of the men. The DPP’s office will consider the files and decide whether charges will be brought against the pair.

Anyone with information that could assist the inquiry is asked to contact gardaí in Portlaoise on 057 8674100 or the garda confidential line on 1800 666111.
