ABBEYLEIX retained its Tidy Towns gold medal for the fourth year in a row when the eagerly awaited national results were announced yesterday (Monday).
The immaculate heritage town scored a glittering 334 marks, just five behind overall winner Listowel, Co Kerry. The richly-deserved county award was greeted with loud cheers by hard-working Abbeyleix Tidy Towns volunteers, when the results were revealed at a ceremony in The Helix, Dublin.
There was good news also for Portlaoise as it retained its silver medal with 309 marks, while Castletown (323) and Ballacolla (321) came second and third respectively in the county awards league table.
Meanwhile, Mountmellick Tidy Towns volunteers also had plenty to celebrate, as they received the Endeavour award in Laois for the biggest improvement from the previous year, increasing their marks by 3.9427% to a total of 290.
In the 60th anniversary year of the Tidy Towns competition, Listowel was named Ireland’s Tidiest Town out of a record number of 883 entries from towns and villages throughout the country.
