THE new Slí na Sláinte routes in Portarlington were officially opened last week.

The Irish Heart Foundation walking routes were developed by Laois County Council to encourage people to walk for health and leisure by creating mapped measured routes in workplaces, communities and in schools.

The new Slí na Sláinte (Path to Health) routes were launched by cllr John King, cathaoirleach of Laois County Council. He unveiled a map board detailing the routes outside Portarlington Leisure Centre, which is the starting point for the two new routes in the locality.

Those who have already walked the routes, local walkers and school groups from St Patrick’s National School and the Presentation Primary have given a thumbs up to them.

Slí na Sláinte co-ordinator from the Irish Heart Foundation Tara Curran said: “We hope that the school pupils, workers and local community in Portarlington will get great enjoyment and benefit from their new routes.”
