A NATIVE of The Heath aims to climb Mount Whitney in California in the coming days.
Alan Dowling, who currently lives in New York, has set himself the challenge of climbing Mount Whitney, the highest peak (4421 metres) in the lower 48 states, in a personal challenge and to raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a cause that’s close to his heart.
It’s a charity that addresses health in men such as testicular cancer, prostate cancer, men’s mental health and suicide prevention.
In my interview with Alan he told me how he has overcome testicular cancer and has shared important advice for men who have just been diagnosed with the disease.
Alan said: “I was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in early 2017. I was lucky enough to be living close to one of the best hospitals in the world for this type of cancer (Sloan and Kettering in New York city). As a result of this and the particular stage that I had, I was able to avoid chemotherapy in lieu of a second larger operation which, touch wood, has been great for my recovery so far.”
He then went on to share some vital information for men who think they may have testicular cancer.
He said: “The key here really is early detection and action, because it will progress and spread if untreated. If you are worried about something that’s not right, no matter the illness, be sure to avoid the common thoughts of it will be alright, especially with a health topic that men in general can be embarrassed to talk about. Get in quickly and be seen as a precaution.
The Movember Foundation backed up Alan’s advice.
“The best thing you can do is check your testicles regularly. If something doesn’t seem right, head to the doctor. Testicular cancer is a highly treatable cancer and can often be cured when treated early.”
Alan hopes to raise between $2,000 and $3,000 for the Movember Foundation. He has already received pledges for more than $1,900.
