UP to 30 hardy souls gathered on the banks of Derryounce Lake in Portarlington on the first day of the year for a swim in the icy waters.

It was all for a good cause, though, as they managed to raise €200 from the first-ever New Year’s Day Derryounce Swim.

The morning dip was organised by Mick Cullen and after braving the water, the shivering swimmers were quickly warmed up with hot punch, mince pies, tea and biscuits.

The money that was raised will go to Portarlington Community Development Association (PCDA) for development works around Derryounce Lake.

The organisers were delighted with the turnout and have now decided to run the event on an annual basis.
