FROM television to Timahoe was the journey travelled by Ireland’s second-fittest family, as the formidable McDonalds arrived to lead the annual charity walk on New Year’s Day.
It was a typically hectic start to 2019 for the athletic McDonald family, who led the 17th charity walk in Timahoe before dashing off to compete in Castlecomer’s legendary Wellie Race that afternoon. No wonder the Ballyroan family reached the finals of RTÉ’s demanding Ireland’s Fittest Family show, before narrowly losing out in a nail-biting finish.
All four of the McDonald team enjoyed the Timahoe event, as dad Martin joined daughters Breda and Kate and son Cian to lead a large crowd eager to walk off the festive excess.
Organiser Johnny Dalton thanked the McDonald quartet for their kindness, as he said: “They had to go straight to the Wellie Race, so we were delighted that they came along and kicked us off. We had a good turnout in great weather and it was a wonderful day.”
The walk took in scenic 6km and 10km routes through the Fossey Hills, raising invaluable funds for the Irish Wheelchair Association and Maura O’Brien’s Fatima pilgrimage fund. All money raised stays in the county.
At a post-walk gathering over refreshments in the community hall, the organisers thanked and paid tribute to everyone who helped make the day such an enjoyable success.
