LAOIS has the distinction of being the first county in Ireland to take part in a one-off initiative to highlight its characteristics during the Year of Geography. It runs for the full 12 months of the year and includes all 32 counties on the island.

Laois will host the event until Saturday 12 January.

The Geographical Society of Ireland has declared 2019 the Year of Geography. It will give counties the opportunity to highlight their geography and to better illustrate the work of geographers.

The Year of Geography will focus mainly on a different county each week, with the exception of a number of themed weeks.

The periods that focus specifically on different counties will involve dissemination of interesting geographical facts about that county while making use of social media and other outlets. There will be a focus on what makes that particular county different in terms of its geological, climatological, cultural, social and political characteristics. There will also be a focus on how that county relates to, and is shaped by, the rest of the world.
