COMMUNITY groups, families and individuals gathered in Stradbally and Portarlington for the annual Goal mile on Christmas Day and raised almost €3,000 for the third-world charity.

It was the 37th staging of the event, which is one of the country’s longest-running annual fundraisers. Goal encourages people across Ireland to walk, jog or run a mile and donate what they can.

The Stradbally event at Oakvale Woods raised almost €2,000, while the Portarlington run at the GAA Grounds brought in €1,000 and both were co-ordinated by local community groups.

Nationally, the festive fundraiser brought in almost €240,000, which highlights the enduring support of Irish families for the charity.

Goal chief executive Siobhan Walsh said: “We are so thankful to all our organisers and participants throughout the country for their dedication to the Goal mile.”
