A YOUNG Laois musician was among the 17 competitors who took part in the final of the prestigious Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal fiddle competition in Cork recently.

Eighteen-year-old Senan Moran from Dysart, Stradbally is a sixth-year student at Mountrath Community School.

The multi-instrumentalist has achieved acclaim in both classical and Irish traditional music since he began playing the fiddle at the age of four.

In 2017, he won the senior violin competition at the Sligo Feis Ceoil and later that day won the RTÉ Lyric FM senior instrumental bursary competition, which carried a prize of €1,000.

Last April, he claimed the senior violin competition for a second time. He also won the U18 fiddle airs competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Drogheda, having previously won in the U15 section in 2015.

In all, Senan has won seven all-Ireland titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann competitions.
