THE ploughing match season is up and running in Laois after a brilliant opening day that bodes well for the weeks ahead.

Clear blue skies on the first Saturday in spring brought eager contestants and fans out in droves for the Portlaoise & District Ploughing match, held at the farm of Tommy and Emma Fitzpatrick in Cloncannon, Mountmellick.

A beautiful sun-filled day despite bracing temperatures brought a spectacular start to the season, which continues every weekend in February. The county ploughing event is fixed for Saturday 16 February in Ballylinan, while the south Laois match will be held near Ballacolla on Saturday 23 February.

Portlaoise & District Ploughing Association secretary Majella French-O’Connor thanked everyone who made the opening day such a wonderful success, including all who helped mark out the land the previous weekend.
