LAOIS Arthouse attracted a large crowd for the launch of a new and exciting exhibition entitled Fiesta on Wednesday 1 May.

The showcase includes 21 individual paintings by members of the Stradbally Active Retirement Group. The artists who are proudly displaying their work include Phyllis Bennett, Ettie Kennedy, Mary Whelan, Vera Donohue, Christy Moran, Tina Mulhall and Brendan Scully.

A special word of thanks must go to Ettie Kennedy, who assisted in organising exhibition.

Speaking at the event, Muireann Ní Chonaill fondly remembered an absent friend and former chairman of the Active Retirement group Michael Mulhare, whom she said “is sadly no longer with us. “Michael was a great friend to the Laois Arthouse”.

Organised to take place as part of the Laois Bealtaine Festival, it’s the first of a vast list of creative events organised around the county to celebrate creativity in older age.

Other happenings at the Laois Arthouse over the coming weeks include pottery workshops by studio artist Cathy Whelan and creative writing workshops by award winning poet Jean Ó Brien. Brochures with all the details of the Laois Bealtaine Festival events in the county are available online (www.laois.ie) or from local libraries.

The exhibition at the Arthouse is on display until Friday 24 May. Opening times are Tuesday and Thursday from 1pm to 5pm and 5.30pm to 8pm, and Saturday from 10am to 1pm except bank holidays (entry through library). On Wednesday and Friday, opening times are 1pm to 4pm (entry through Laois Arthouse).
