THE Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2018.
As part of events to mark this momentous occasion, the local Portlaoise branch donated in excess of €500 worth of books to the paediatric ward at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise.
With tens of thousands of children coming under the care and guidance of INTO members in the area over the years, the organisation knows only too well the fantastic role played by the staff of this ward.
Many children of INTO members have also been under the care of the doctors, nurses and administrative staff on this ward on many occasions, so it was deemed a fitting beneficiary of the donation.
The local theme was maintained as all of the books were sourced and provided by Allbooks and News at Lyster Square, Portlaoise. The generosity of Colm O’Hara and his staff ensured that the volume of books donated went far and above what would otherwise have been possible.
The members of Portlaoise branch INTO are delighted to mark the 150th anniversary of the organisation in this way. Branch chairperson Deirdre Fleming and secretary Darach Kennedy were warmly greeted by staff when they brought the books to the library and the ward staff are appreciative of the gesture.
