A SLEEK silver Porsche and lovingly-maintained Minis were among the iconic cars that travelled all over Laois in aid of charity.

The colourful convoy gathered at the Manor Hotel in Abbeyleix at high noon before setting off on a 108km journey, which took a scenic route through the Slieve Blooms and over to Stradbally before returning home.

Organised by Abbeyleix and District Lions Club (ADLC), the second annual car run featured enthusiastic members of the Irish BMW E30 Club and the Irish Mini Owners’ Club as well as other generous supporters of the fundraising event.

The fleet of 25 cars in all shapes and sizes drew cheers and waves as it rolled through Mountrath, Clonaslee, Rosenallis, Mountmellick, Portlaoise and Stradbally before taking a pit stop for refreshments at Pedigree Corner and fuelling up for the journey home to Abbeyleix.

ADLC secretary Aubrey Hutchinson, who joined the convoy in his treasured 2008 silver Porsche, paid tribute to sponsors Laois Hire and Breslin’s SuperValu of Abbeyleix as well as all car owners and helpers who kindly gave their time to the event on the last Sunday in May.

The car run is among a variety of fundraising events organised by the Lions Club in aid of worthy causes in Abbeyleix and surrounding areas. After building momentum this year, it is hoped that the car run will attract even more supporters when the 2020 hat-trick run rolls around.
