THE Laois and Mountrath Youth Theatres recently presented an end-of-year show in the Dunamaise Arts Centre.

Each group completed a working foundation in theatre practice over their year-long programmes. They developed the appropriate vocabulary to work with improvisation, acting and performance, group work and collaboration to make their show. Throughout their final term, they focused on developing this production. Both groups were facilitated and directed by Louise White to help them bring their show Only us to stage.

It was a brand new production and devised from their own working of the famous novel Lord of the flies, which focuses on a group of school children stranded on an uninhabited island and their attempt to govern themselves.

Members of the Mountrath and Portlaoise theatre groups created a work that was true to their own interests and performance capabilities. They learned about the fun and the formal aspects of creating their own performance about taking responsibility as part of a collective and about the focus and commitment that’s required for a full-scale production. This performance helped them to grow in confidence in their own abilities.
