Wayne Kelly, Portlaoise light-welterweight, in action in the Deloitte Arena, Rotherham boxing for Ireland against Holland

PORTLAOISE light-welterweight Wayne Kelly to the Deloitte Arena, Rotterdam to represent Ireland against Holland. His opponent, Enrico La Cruz, represented Holland at the Rio Olympics 2016.
The contest was boxed at a very high intensity with the Portlaoise boxer, well on top in the first round. The second round was no different except being a little closer. Towards the end of the second round, there was a clash of heads. Unfortunately for Kelly he got a very bad cut on his right cheek bone which resulted in the referee stopping the contest.
The decision went to the judges score cards. With five judges from Holland getting a decision was going to be extremely difficult under these circumstances.
However, the judges scored the contest a draw on the computer. Then the referee, instructed the judges to press the button for the boxer they believed was the winner. Surprisingly, two of the judges voted for the Irishman and three of the judges gave the contest to the Dutch man, on a split decision.
To get the vote of two of the Dutch officials was testament to Kelly’s performance. The talk around the arena was all about the Portlaoise man’s outstanding performance.
Wayne, will view his performance, as his best to date. He will take huge satisfaction and confidence from this particular performance and hope to book his place on the World Championship team later this year, one of the qualifiers, for the Tokyo Olympics.
