PORTLAOISE District Court has become the second-busiest district court in Ireland, according to its presiding judge.
Judge Catherine Staines revealed the latest figures to a packed courtroom last Thursday, when a whopping 180 cases ranging from drug possession to traffic offences and violent assaults were listed for that day alone.
The judge said: “We now have 14,800 cases a year in this district court. That is the second-busiest in the country. It is double the average.”
The high number of cases means that most hearing dates for contested cases between now and the end of the year have already been filled.
