THE weekly Comhaltas summer sessions in Portlaoise and Abbeyleix were scenes of celebration as seven branches shared in the county’s success at the recent Leinster Fleadh in Athboy, Co Meath.

Members from Camross, Clonaslee, Portarlington, Portlaoise, Spink and Ratheniska won an amazingr 76 medals.

One of the most competitive events is Grúpaí Ceoil, which comprises 20-member ensembles playing arrangements of traditional tunes as a suite for up to eight minutes. Success in this area is a good indicator of the overall standard and reflects the teacher’s ability to arrange music.

Portlaoise under-12s, Camross 15 to 18 and a senior group from the Seán Ryan branch earned qualifying places in three of the four age categories.

Camross set dancers and Ratheniska céilí dancers maintained a strong tradition in this discipline and qualified for next month’s all-Ireland in Drogheda.
