Minor Hurling Shield Final
Camross Na Fianna 4-12
By Pat Delaney
TWO clubs due to meet in the senior hurling championship semi-final had a dress rehearsal in Derrynaseera on last Thursday evening. Their last championship final meeting at this level was nine years ago when Rathdowney/Errill had 13 points to spare.
This year neither made any impression in the championship but finished runners up to qualify for the shield decider. Camross joined with Ballyfin two years ago and won the title with the last puck of the game but last week there were no late heroics.
Early points from Dan Delaney, who had a great year at county level and his fellow county player Tomas Keyes put Camross in a commanding position at the end of the opening quarter.
Camross struck for goals by Ryan Cuddy and Trevor Abbot after great work by Mossy Keyes. Mossy added goal number three. Rathdowney/Errill were dealt a blow when a defender was sent off and at the interval the home team held a lead of 3-6 to 0-7.
The second half saw Rathdowney/Errill fire over some great points by Daniel Bowe from placed balls, Ryan Costigan, who added a well taken goal and brought them right back into contention.
But Camross hit back with points by Mossy Keyes and Dan Delaney to extend their advantage to six points with 15 minutes remaining. The visitors never gave up but just could not add to their solitary goal.
When Dan Delaney shot his side’s fourth goal there was no way back. In the closing minutes Camross added points by Tomas Keyes, Darragh Lyons and Dan Delaney.
After the game Joe Phelan (Camross and Laois defender) presented the winners Shield to Camross captain Dan Delaney and paid tribute to both teams for a wonderful sporting contest laced with some great score getting by both teams.
