TALL tales and amazing artworks are on offer at an exciting exhibition that is a first for Laois.
The inaugural ‘Young Curators Exhibition Project’ sees primary school pupils from Scoil Bhríde, Mountrath working with professional curators, artists and the Dunamaise Gallery to curate their own art exhibition.
The show called ‘Our Choice, Our World’ was officially opened at Dunamaise Arts Centre in Portlaoise on Friday 4 October and will run until Saturday 9 November, with workshops for families and schools throughout the county.
The venture is presented by Dunamaise Arts Centre, Creative Ireland Laois and the Laois Arts Office, in conjunction with Kevin Kavanagh Gallery.
Fifth- and sixth-class pupils from Mountrath have been working with Dunamaise box office manager Laura Amy Dunne and professional curator, gallerist and artist Kevin Kavanagh as they learn how to select and present work by established artists. The exhibition is the culmination of their work and will inspire other fun arts activities.
A related programme of talks and workshops for schoolchildren and families will run alongside the exhibition and there is a creative space where people can respond to the art works.
Children of all ages are invited to respond throughout the exhibition and visits from other schools are welcome, with class and family activity sheets available. There will be fun art workshops inspired by the exhibition for children aged seven-plus on Wednesday 30 October at 4pm and for families on Saturday 2 November at 2pm.
Young people are invited to tell tall tales from their imagination, sparked by the artworks on display, in an ‘Inspired Storytelling Workshop’ on Saturday 9 November at 2pm. Primary schools from around the county are also invited to visit the exhibition and enjoy an art workshop each Thursday by request.
The project is supported by Creative Ireland Laois, as part of the Creative Ireland Programme in partnership with Laois County Council. All events are free and places for workshops can be booked on 057 8663355.
