TIMAHOE stepped out in high spirits for its 18th annual New Year’s Day walk in aid of two important charities.
Laois senior hurling star Mark Kavanagh from Rathdowney-Errill led a large and enthusiastic group of walkers through the Fossey Hills, enjoying beautifully scenic routes that offered a perfect start to the year ahead.
Organised by Johnny Dalton and Maura O’Brien, the walk collects about €3,000 every year for the Irish Wheelchair Association and the Fatima Invalid Fund, with all funds staying in the county.
At a happy post-walk gathering in the community hall, the organisers thanked Mark and everyone who gave up a day of rest to support the event and who helped make it such a wonderful success.
Johnny said: “It was a great day for it, dry and not too cold and there was a very good turnout. Some people have done this walk every year since it began and we want to thank everyone who took part, not just this year, but every year.”
The annual event is an ideal way to banish winter cobwebs and walk off the festive excess, with scenic 6km and 10km routes suited to a variety of ages and abilities. The proceeds are divided evenly between the two charities.
