GENERATIONS of families gathered in Abbeyleix for a wonderful celebration of Grandparents’ Day at Scoil Mhuire NS.

Teachers and pupils welcomed cherished grandparents back to the classroom on Wednesday 30 January for an event that has become one of the best-loved annual highlights of the school year.

The joyful day was tinged with sadness as everyone fondly remembered the late Abbeyleix parish priest Fr John Cummins, who passed away so tragically in an accident after celebrating this same ceremony a year ago to the day.

The school hall was packed to capacity, as the young joined the young at heart in prayer and song to remember Fr Cummins and to celebrate the invaluable role of grandparents in students’ lives.

After extending a warm welcome, parish priest Fr Paddy Byrne regaled everyone with memories of his own beloved granny, who sounded just as interesting a character as her grandson!

Prayers, poems and stories were read by students to honour grandparents who were   present and those absent for whatever reason.

Sixth-class pupils did themselves proud as they hosted refreshments and conversed with guests after the main ceremony, which was held in the middle of Catholic Schools Week. As always, it was a beautiful day that provided many rich memories for everyone involved with the school.
