DURROW student Fionn Whelan was presented with an Ad Astra Scholarship at UCD last week.

Fionn, who secured 625 points in last year’s leaving cert exam, was one of just 30 students to received the prestigious scholarship.

The bursary is worth €3,000 a year, covering mentoring and a range of tailored supports. It also offers a programme of workshops and seminars by academics, distinguished alumni and guest speakers throughout the year to develop the scholars’ academic and personal potential.

However, it’s not the first time the Durrow student has won awards for academic proficiency. He began his school years at Our Lady’s Meadow NS in Durrow before moving on to St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny, where he obtained his impressive leaving cert result.

Fionn excelled at engineering subjects, having studied applied maths, chemistry and physics and he’s currently studying engineering at UCD.

In between his studies, Fionn is a busy sportsman, lining out for his local hurling club The Harps as well as training with the UCD freshers hurling team. He is also a member of the Laois under-20 hurling squad.
