PORTLAOISE hospital has only one confirmed Covid-19 patient at the moment, according to latest figures from the HSE.
Frontline medical staff were caring for one critically ill coronavirus patient in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) last night.
All ICU beds were full, as staff looked after seriously ill patients with non-coronavirus conditions, but there were 25 vacant general care beds.
Meanwhile, there were no suspected Covid-19 cases in the hospital at 8pm last night.
The official figures are published in the HSE’s ‘Daily Operations Update for Acute Hospitals’, which gives the number of Covid-19 patients at 8pm each night and the number of vacant ICU beds at 6.30pm each evening.
In line with other acute hospitals around the country, there has been a big decline in Covid-19 patient numbers at Portlaoise hospital since the ‘surge’ of early- to mid-April.
Just over a month ago, on Sunday 19 April, Portlaoise hospital had eight patients with confirmed Covid-19 and five suspected cases.
In neighbouring Offaly, Tullamore hospital had three critically ill Covid-19 patients in ICU last night. There was also one suspected Covid-19 case.
