The Laois/Offaly probationer gardaí who were presented with their official garda identification badges at a ceremony in Portlaoise

LOCAL Garda recruits were praised for their work during the Covid-19 pandemic at an event in Portlaoise today.

At a ceremony held in Portlaoise Garda Station, probationer gardaí from the Laois/Offaly division were presented with their official garda identification badges.

The badges were presented by Chief Superintendent John Scanlan, Superintendent Anthony Pettit and Inspector Patrick Guinan.

The group of 16 gardaí was allocated to the division from the Garda College in Templemore, at the start of the Covid-19 crisis last March.

They were stationed in Portlaoise, Mountmellick, Portarlington, Edenderry, Tullamore, Clara and Birr.

At the ceremony, Chief Superintendent Scanlan and his senior colleagues thanked the probationers for their commitment, professionalism and dedication during the crisis.
