From this Thursday no vehicles will be permitted along Main Street.

By Joe Barrett.

Laois County Council has announced that it is closing the Main Street of Portlaoise to vehicle traffic from this Thursday 2 July until Sunday 30 August.

The section of Main Street open to pedestrians only from 11am to 5.30pm daily is from the junction of Railway Street to the intersection with Church Avenue.

According to the council, the reason for the temporary road closure is to “support adherence to public health guidelines. To support the measures outlined in the Roadmap for the Reopening of Society and Business. To support the actions of the County Laois Business Recovery Group and to enable Main Street, Portlaoise to be a Covid Compliant Street.”

Alternative routes open to vehicles are by Church Street, Tower Hill and Church Avenue.

During the temporary closure the existing one way vehicular system on Railway Street (Tower Hill to Main Street) will be reversed (i.e. Main Street to Tower Hill).
