THIS year’s senior championship kicks off tonight with the meeting of Ballyroan Abbey and St Joseph’s.
These two will have reason remember each other from last year.
Ballyroan Abbey caused a bit of a surprise when beating Emo after a replay in round one. They were then to draw with Portarlington in the second round but this time lost the replay.
On the other side St Joseph’s lost badly to O’Dempsey’s in the opening round but easily accounted for The Heath next time out.
As a result the pair were pitted against each other in round three. There was little or nothing to choose between the sides and just who would advance to the last eight of the championship was in the balance right up to the final whistle. In the end the Saints hung on in a nail-biter.
Thursday game might not be as exciting but I expect the same outcome. Whether the Kellyville outfit can go much further is doubtful.
And to add an extra bit of spice to tonight’s encounter we have two former team mates managing the two sides. Padraig Clancy will be in the Ballyroan Abbey dug out while the St Joseph’s dug out will be familiar territory for Joe Higgins.
