Main Street, Portlaoise was closed off for over an hour earlier this evening following an accident.

It appears that a car, which had parked outside Lilly’s Bar, drove forward crashing into the door of the licensed premises. It shattered the door and caused some damage to the front wing of the car.

The street was blocked off at the Market Square by a fire tender, with a further appliance positioned midway down the street at Fortune’s Corner. A second fire tender was in position in the lower square in front of what will be the new library.

An ambulance arrived on the scene 45 minutes or so after the incident to tend to the people in the car. It is believed there were no serious injuries. Gardaí also attended the scene.

The bar is owned by Portlaoise and Laois footballer Kieran Lillis. The accident rounded off what was a bad few days for Lillis, as his Portlaoise team were knocked out of the senior football championship on Sunday by Emo.
