Artist Sandra Kelly

By Chris Fingleton

A LAOIS woman who recently discovered a hidden talent for art will hold her first solo exhibition at Abbeyleix Library this month.

Sandra Kelly from Doonane Hill, The Swan began painting at the start of this year. The inspiration to paint came after a family member became seriously ill.

“My current exhibition is themed around the personal journey I have undertaken in 2020. In times of difficulty, I find it helps to look to nature for guidance. Nature is constant and reassuring and will give us sunrises and sunsets, buds and leaves and stunning flowers as well as shedding its riches in preparation for a winter sleep.

“My wish is that my work portrays the beauty of life. My exhibition is about adaptability and moving forward in times of worry and duty and loss. People are doing their best to get through this year and beyond and it’s so important that we remain hopeful and see beauty with fresh, clearer eyes and renewed determination.”

Asked to describe her work, Sandra replied: “I am an acrylic-on-canvas intuitive artist. I start with a blank canvas and I paint until an image comes through and then I layer on top of that until I put the brush down and I have a finished piece of art.”
