THE past weekend was one of the most amazing weekends in a pong time on the athletic fronts. Records were toppled and personal bests set with unbelievable regularity at the Elite ILH Micro Meeting at Abbotstown.

The European Indoor Championships due take placed in Torun in Poland from 5-7 March the meeting was for carded athletes who it was deemed have realistic expectations of qualifying for either the Europeans or the Olympic Games.

There was Laois interest with St Abban’s AC’s Saragh Buggy competing in the Women’s long jump on Sunday. It was a tough outing for Saragh who fouled her first five jumps as she attempted to jump a new personal best which she required to qualify for the European Championships.

On her sixth and final attempt she jumped 5.86 metres to give her second place overall but unfortunately short of the qualifying standard of 6.80 metres.
