The former Centrepoint Shopping Centre on the Mountrath Road in Portlaoise

ANOTHER fire has broken out at the derelict Centrepoint shopping centre in Portlaoise,

Emergency services are at the scene of the latest blaze, where fire crews are dousing flames coming from the rear of the building.

GardaĆ and units from the Laois Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene on the Mountath Road this evening, after the alarm was raised by local residents who saw smoke billowing from the premises.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area as emergency services deal with the latest incident.

It is the third fire within two weeks at the Centrepoint site. The first blaze erupted at lunchtime on Wednesday 24 March and was brought under control by mid-afternoon.

Fire-fighters were called to the scene again at about 5pm the same day, when a more extensive fire broke out in the dilapidated building.

There have been constant complaints from public representatives and nearby residents over ongoing anti-social behaviour at the former shopping centre.
