THE main road between Portlaoise and Mountmellick will remain closed overnight, after a serious accident in which a truck overturned.

Gardaí confirmed tonight that the N80 between the two towns is expected to remain closed until tomorrow morning, while a clean-up operation continues.

The incident happened at about 4.30pm this afternoon, when a truck carrying timber overturned and completely blocked the road.

Emergency services attended the scene and the shocked lorry driver was transported to hospital by ambulance. He is in a stable condition tonight and it is understood that he did not suffer serious injuries.

At about 9pm tonight, Laois-Offaly gardaí confirmed that emergency services remain at the scene and diversions will be in place until the morning.

In a post on the Laois-Offaly Garda Síochána Facebook page, gardaí added: “The driver is stable. The road remains closed overnight. As soon as information becomes available regarding road reopening this post be will further updated.”
