A POWER cut in Portlaoise left more than 4,500 homes without electricity tonight.

The fault was reported just after 7.15pm and affected 4,557 customers, according to the ESB.

The utility said the fault would be repaired quickly and supply should be restored to most homes by around 8pm.

In an update before 8.45pm, the ESB said that 2,690 properties in Portlaoise are still affected and the estimated restore time is 10pm tonight.

The ESB said that a further ten customers in Mountrath are also affected by the outage (see notice below), although local residents report that a large number of properties are without electricity.

A number of residents in other areas have also reported power cuts, including Borris-in-Ossory, Trumera and Camross.

While the initial estimated restore time was 8pm, there may be a longer delay for some customers.

The ESB apologised for the loss of supply and said that power would be restored as quickly as possible.

Updates will be available on the ESB website at powercheck.esbnetworks.ie
