Ballybrophy railway station is set for a much-needed car park expansion

By Carmel Hayes

A BUSY railway station in Laois has received the green light for a much-needed car park expansion.

Iarnród Éireann confirmed this morning that it has received permission and a grant from Laois County Council for the car park extension at Ballybrophy station.

The project will not only increase parking spaces from 25 to 96 but will also see improvements to footpaths and provision for more bicycle parking.

Brian Connelly Builders Ltd has been awarded the contract and site works will begin shortly, with a completion date of next summer.

The works will be carried out in a number of phases but access to the station car park will not be affected, according to Iarnród Éireann.

Ballybrophy station has 13 daily weekday train services to and from Dublin Heuston. It is also the interchange point for Ballybrophy to Limerick services via Nenagh.

Iarnród Éireann said: “The service will also benefit from ongoing line improvement works on the Dublin-Cork line, which ultimately will deliver improved journey times for customers.”
