Dunamase College students working on the mosaic

A MAGNIFICENT mosaic created by young people has been installed on the exterior of Portlaoise Leisure Centre.

The beautiful artwork aims to discourage inappropriate graffiti on public buildings and is a striking addition to the centre’s newly painted exterior.

Mosaic artist Aidan Byrne, of Make Mosaic, was engaged by Laois County Council to devise and facilitate a unique mosaic piece with young people in Portlaoise.

The artist worked with transition year students from Dunamase College/Coláiste Dhún Masc and their art teacher Deirdre Doolin.

The artist held an initial consultation with students and got an overview of current issues with graffiti. A mosaic design was drawn up and a programme of works was planned, with the artist returning for several sessions to demonstrate skills and check on progress.

The art teacher was also able to progress the work between visits. The students thoroughly enjoyed the project, as they learned new skills and created brilliant work that included their own design ideas.

A project spokesperson said|: “The finished product is a collaboration of all the parties and is beautifully finished and a credit to all involved. It is a lovely addition to the newly painted exterior of Portlaoise Leisure Centre and we think the message reflected in the work can translate to all who see it.”
