Leinster Senior League Major 1C

Portlaoise AFC 6

Corduff FC 2

AFTER a hard earned draw away to Ardmore Rovers last week, Portlaoise were looking for their fourth win in five games when they hosted Corduff in Rossleighan.

The home side got off to a flyer when Cathal Hewitt played an exquisite through ball to Davis Pedro up front who calmly slotted it away inside the first 10 minutes.

With the home side well on top it wasn’t long before James Newell gave Fionn Scully a lovely lofted ball over the top which Scully ran onto and buried it with his left foot into the roof of the net.

With Portlaoise looking like they were going to run away with things Corduff won a free kick on the edge of Portlaoise’s box. The well hit free deflected off the top of the wall and flew into the top corner to beat Mateusz Cwienk in the goals, giving the Blanchardstown men a foothold back in the game.

With renewed energy for the last 10 minutes of the half, the away side won another free 30 yards out from the goal. A dangerous ball swung in toward the goalmouth forced Paraig Cahill into attempting to volley it clear but he didn’t catch it clean and ended up sending it toward his goal beating Cwienk for an own goal and sending the sides in level at 2-2 at the half time break.

Portlaoise started the second half much the brighter side and they went close straight away with an effort from Fionn Scully which he pulled just wide of the post. Davis Pedro would make no mistake for the go ahead goal though when he was played in from another brilliant through ball splitting the defence from Cathal Hewitt in midfield, slotting it low and hard by the keeper again.

Fionn Scully then quickly added his second of the game when the ball broke to him on the edge of the Corduff box and he finished well to make it 4-2. Davis Pedro then got his well deserved hat trick when he converted a wonderful free kick 20 yards out from the goal whipping it over the wall with his right foot into the top corner.

Jack Stone then put the cherry on the cake with a brilliant individual goal which saw him win two 50/50s which sent the midfielder in one on one with the Corduff keeper which he calmly slotted into the bottom left corner for his first goal of the season. This was a well deserved goal for Stone who was relentless in midfield for Portlaoise winning tackles and breaking up Corduff’s play from minute one.

This was a rock solid performance from Portlaoise as they move up to seventh in the league only two points off third placed Ayrfield Utd who sit in the last promotion place.

A special mention to Ronan McEvoy who made his full debut for the Senior B side putting in a great shift on the left win.
