STUDENTS made a splash during a welcome escape from studies on a memorable adventure in Laois this month.
Mountrath Community School classmates didn’t have to travel far for their ‘midland escape’, as they took time out on the canal in Vicarstown on Thursday 5 May.
A group of excited transition year students enjoyed an afternoon of team building and relaxation, while learning how to kayak with the team at Midland Escape.
TY coordinator Mary Gannon described the day as a unique opportunity for the class to learn team building skills, as well as trying out the new skill of kayaking.
Teacher Michael Boyhan said students had to look out for each other, while helping and enabling everyone to finish a task when necessary, making the day a valuable exercise in teamwork.
Student Siún Donnelly said it was great fun and everyone learned very quickly how to kayak. Classmate Alex Power agreed that they all had to work as a team to ensure that everyone finished, while falling into the water and starting over again was all part of the fun.
Ms Gannon added that the day was very worthwhile and the stunning backdrop of the canal at Vicarstown made the day complete. She said: “It was real nutrition for the soul. It was also tremendous for the students’ wellbeing, building up their physical strength.”
