A PRISIONER who assaulted another inmate in the Midlands Prison told Portlaoise District Court that he was pressurised into doing it. The defendant pleaded guilty to the assault, which occurred in the prison on 22 August 2021.
Sergeant Seán Keane told the court that while a prisoner was on the phone in the recreation area of the prison, the defendant struck him on the back of his head and when he turned around struck him in his face.
Representing himself in court, the defendant told Judge Andrew Cody: “I was pressurised into doing something I didn’t want to do. I was threatened that if I didn’t do it that I would be assaulted.”
The court was told that defendant had 145 previous convictions, including assault, criminal damage, theft and public order offences.
Judge Cody convicted the defendant of the offence and sentenced him to two months in prison.
