An overall view of the volleyball blitz in Portlaoise College

By Laura Peckaityte and Jacob Ennis

ON Wednesday 20 July, the Portlaoise Pandas Volleyball Club hosted their very first spectacular volleyball blitz in Portlaoise College. The Portlaoise Pandas organised this event to help with fundraising for the club and to give other teams a wonderful experience.

Six teams from across Leinster came to participate in the tournament – Kilkenny Spartans, Carlow IT, Naas Cobras, Naas Vipers, Portlaoise Pandas boys team and Portlaoise Pandas girls team.

The day started off with 15 separate matches to determine the placements of the teams. Naas Cobras and Naas Vipers were defeated and did not make it to the semi-finals.

In the first semi-final, Carlow IT played Portlaoise Pandas girls and, as hard as the Pandas tried, Carlow claimed the match when winning the first two sets.

The second semi-final saw Kilkenny Spartans take on Portlaoise Pandas boys. Kilkenny Spartans won the first set but Portlaoise Pandas boys got back up and defeated them in the last two sets. So now we had a final between Carlow IT and Portlaoise Pandas boys.

Although they did put up an amazing fight, Portlaoise Pandas boys lost to the accomplished Carlow IT who won the first three sets of the final. As blitz winners Carlow IT were presented with a beautiful trophy sponsored by Jerry Browne Jewellers.
