Comhlach na Feirme Limited has applied to Laois County Council to carryout out major refurbishment works on Millbrook House, the building also known as Steward’s House, and associated grounds of Abbeyleix Estate.
Steward’s House is located in close proximity to the following protected structures – A stable yard, Home Farm House and a Church of Ireland.
The development will consist of the demolition of the existing two-storey extension and porch area. The construction of a new pitched single-storey extension to the north and back of the main house. A new flat roof orangery with rooflight on the main house. A new ancillary outbuilding/shed and a new section of the boundary wall.
Internal and external alterations to the main house include the formation, removal and enlargement of the opes (load-bearing timber frame panels). Repair and restoration work include a new external lime plaster finish. Removal of non-original internal partitions and the refurbishment of windows. Restoration works will also be carried out to the existing dovecote, which will include the reconstruction of damaged wall sections, repainting and the construction of a new roof.
The development will also consist of the formation of a new estate access road, 125 metre in length, soft and hard landscaping works which will include boundary treatment and the construction of a new gravel driveway to the front as well as all associated site development works.
Laois County Council is due to have a decision on the application in October.
