A man with 231 previous convictions, including 63 for theft, had a theft case struck out after he pleaded guilty to stealing two bottles of Smirnoff vodka from the Lidl store in Portlaoise.

The alcohol valued at €39.32 was not recovered. The man appeared at Portlaoise District Court recently by video link from prison.

He pleaded guilty to the offence, which happened on 18 January last year.

The man’s solicitor, Josephine Fitzpatrick, said that her client’s sister had travelled to the court with €40 to give to Lidl.

She also said that he had completed an introduction course on how to address his drinking.

Judge Michèle Finan noted that the defendant’s sister had travelled to repay the store and that he was addressing “his old ways”.

Striking out the theft charge, the judge said: “I wish him the best with that in the future. Take care.”
