RESIDENTS are afraid that an accident will happen unless cars are prevented from parking on corners in a Portlaoise housing estate.
Cllr Thomasina Connell, who lives in Esker Hills on Ridge Road, highlighted residents’ fears at the latest Portlaoise Municipal District meeting.
She proposed that double yellow lines be installed at certain points of Laurel Drive in the estate, to prevent vehicles parking on corners and blocking the view of drivers coming onto the main road.
Cllr Connell said a lot of residents had approached her about the problem, as there are three locations where parked cars are causing a traffic hazard.
She said: “There are vehicles parking on the corners, so you are almost halfway out of Laurel Drive before you can actually see anything on the main road. It’s a bit precarious and it’s going to be the cause of an accident.”
The proposal was supported by cllr Willie Aird.
Senior engineer Wes Wilkinson said he would meet cllr Connell at the location, to review requirements for double yellow lines. He said: “I will make arrangements to install double yellow lines as appropriate.”
