LAOIS gardaí are warning householders to be on the alert after reports of bogus tradesmen calling to homes over the past day.
The conmen are driving non-Irish registered vehicles and are offering to do ground works, according to the local reports.
Gardaí said this morning that the fraudsters have been operating around the Ballyfin, Mountmellick and Mountrath areas during the past day and are likely to call to other areas.
Issuing a warning on Garda Síochána Laois Offaly social media sites, they said: “Be careful. They will no doubt visit other areas, so be alert and report sightings.
“We see bogus callers call to people in communities offering trades and services, with very little known about them. This isn’t just vulnerable people. Some professionals and businesses engage too because the price seems right. It seldom works out well.”
Gardaí added: “Please remember a hi-viz jacket is for safety. It doesn’t confer authority or legitimacy on a person. Always check credentials and say no thanks. If in doubt, report concerns too.”
