A DRIVER was caught drinking beer behind the wheel by Laois gardaí last night.

The Laois Roads Policing Unit was conducting a checkpoint in Mountmellick when they stopped the car (pictured above and below).

The driver had a bottle of beer in the door compartment and was drinking it while driving, according to gardaí.

The driver was arrested at the scene and was found to be over the legal alcohol limit.

Posting photos on social media today, gardaí said: “Laois Roads Policing Unit while conducting a checkpoint in Mountmellick last night stopped this vehicle and found the driver drinking bottles of beer behind the wheel while driving. The driver was arrested at the scene was found to be over the legal limit.”

The culprit has been charged to appear before an upcoming sitting of Portlaoise District Court.
