NATIONAL Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) president Francie Gorman returned to official duties this week, following successful surgery to remove a pancreatic tumour.

The Laois man is delighted and relieved to have received the all clear, since undergoing the operation in February.

In an interview with Midlands 103, he said his consultant’s last words to him following the good news were, “You won the Lotto!”

The Ballinakill farmer, a native of Spink, feels very fortunate as he was attending his GP for other medical checks when the tumour was discovered. Following surgery, it was confirmed that the tumour was not cancerous.

Absence from duty was typically brief for the hard-working farm leader, who manages 130 acres in Ballinakill as well as overseeing the biggest farming organisation in the country.

His last official function was the IFA AGM in February, before he prepared for his hospital stay and allowed himself some recovery time with his wife Kay and son Tom. All were delighted when he got the all clear two weeks ago.

The IFA president looked fit and healthy today when he met with French ambassador to Ireland Celine Place, as part of the ongoing Mercosur talks.
