The discovery of two viable pipe bombs at a site near a nursery has led to a security alert in Co Down.

The PSNI was notified that two suspicious objects had been discovered outside a commercial premises on Church Street in Dromore at around 11.15am on Wednesday.

PSNI members and Army Technical Officers attended the scene to examine the objects, which have since been declared as “viable pipe bomb type devices”.

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said the discovery was made at A1 Recovery, the yard beside The Old Station Nursery.

She said the area was cordoned off and evacuated pending examination of the devices.

Ms Little-Pengelly said: “The police advise that there is no risk to the public but ask that people stay away from the area until confirmation that it is safe to return.”

Alliance councillor Jessica Johnson said she had been in contact with the PSNI, adding: “Trust parents and children are all safe.

“Their safety is paramount at this time.”

Meanwhile, the nursery itself had said in a social media post: “We just want to reassure everyone that the children and staff at The Old Station Nursery are safe and playing happily in the sunshine.

“We will continue to wait for PSNI guidance. Please do not collect your child until we have further information from PSNI.”

Shortly before 7pm, the PSNI said the devices had been made safe and were taken away for further forensic examination.

All roads have now been re-opened and the PSNI is appealing to anyone with information which could assist them with their inquiries into the incident.

Those with information can contact the PSNI in Lurgan on 101, quoting reference number 497 02/04/25.

Information can also be provided online at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/ or, via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
