St Patrick's Day parade cancelled in Abbeyleix

The parade in Abbeyleix was cancelled on 12 March
The St Patrick’s Day parade in Abbeyleix has been cancelled, less than a week before the big day.
Traditionally one of the best parades in the county, the event will not go ahead as planned next Monday 17 March.
In a statement on social media yesterday, 12 March, the Abbeyleix St Patrick’s Day Committee said: ‘Due to a culmination of circumstances beyond our control, we regret that there will be no St Patrick’s Day parade. We will be holding a public meeting in September to look for support and volunteers for 2026.’
While no reasons were given, it is understood that a shortage of volunteers was among the factors that led to the disappointing cancellation.
The colourful parade always attracted large crowds to the beautiful heritage town but it requires a huge team of organisers, stewards and volunteers, during the weeks leading up to the event and on the day itself.
It is hoped that the parade will return in all its glory next year and people are urged to the attend the public meeting in September, to ensure there is enough support.
