SFC Rd 3 Preview: Intriguing battle of local rivals to kick off the night

TONIGHT’S SFC Round 3 ties carry huge significance. The reward for the winners is a place in the quarter-finals alongside Portarlington, Portlaoise, Courtwood and St Joseph's, while defeat means a drop into the Senior 'B' competition Stradbally v The Heath

Local rivalry, championship football and a quarter-final place on the line. There is unlikely to be any shortage of motivation when neighbours Stradbally and The Heath square off.

Stradbally's championship campaign has been something of a rollercoaster. They impressed in Round 1 with a high-scoring victory over Killeshin, hitting 2-22 in an attacking display that suggested they could be genuine contenders. However, they ran into a powerful Portarlington side in Round 2 and were comfortably beaten by the reigning champions.

The Heath have taken the opposite route. Their opening-round defeat to Portarlington was expected enough, but they bounced back impressively in Round 2, seeing off Clonaslee/St Manman's by three points to keep their season alive.

The key question is which version of Stradbally turns up. If they reproduce the attacking fluency shown against Killeshin, they possess enough firepower to trouble any defence in the county. The Heath, meanwhile, tend to thrive in tight, physical contests and will be confident of dragging this game into a dogfight.

Local derbies often ignore form lines so expect intensity from the opening whistle.

Ballyroan Abbey v Park/Ratheniska

This looks one of the most intriguing games of the weekend.

Ballyroan Abbey began their campaign strongly with a seven-point win over Rosenallis before suffering a heavy defeat to Courtwood in Round 2. That loss will have hurt, but it also provides a clear focus ahead of a winner-takes-all encounter.

Park/Ratheniska's route to Round 3 has been slightly different. The intermediate champions opened life back in the senior grade with a narrow defeat to Arles Killeen before responding impressively with victory over Crettyard.

Having only returned to senior football this season, Park/Ratheniska have shown they can hold their own at this level.

Much may depend on how Ballyroan Abbey respond to the Courtwood defeat. If they can rediscover the form that saw them comfortably dispatch Rosenallis, they have the quality to advance. Park/Ratheniska, though, seem to be building momentum and arrive with the confidence that comes from a must-win victory in Round 2.

This has all the ingredients of the closest game of tonight’s O’Moore Park double header.
